Ditching the Dummy … why my 3-year-old still has one!

Ditching The Dummy | The Nursery Collective

by Catherine Nelson-Williams

My daughter turned 3 at the end of June, and ditching the dummy is a milestone we still haven't reached.

I was thinking about this recently and how different things are the second time around. As a first-time Mum, I was adamant about getting rid of the dummy and bottle early, as per the pediatrician’s instructions. Giving up the bottle was easy enough as my son was one of those kids that preferred solids to milk so he easily stopped using his bottle soon after he turned one. Ditching the dummy however was another matter!

Five Ways to Make Childhood Memories Your Children Will Remember!

Top Ways to Make Childhood Memories | The Nursery Collective

by Catherine Nelson-Williams

As a parent in an increasingly faster paced world, I often find myself struggling to find ways to make childhood memories with my kids that are truly meaningful.  I see a lot of other parents around me doing the same. Suddenly as parents, we find ourselves overdoing it to try and “make memories” - like trying to get the perfect family holiday photo so we can pop it on Facebook or Instagram (c’mon admit it, we all do this), and stressing out when our kids won’t co-operate. Or going a little crazy trying to fit in “memory making activities” by doing activities or visiting attractions we can’t even guarantee our kids will even remember.

See the thing is, memories don’t actually have to be made. Memories just ARE.

We can’t choose what our kids actually remember, just as our parents couldn’t choose what we remember from our own childhood. Most kids can’t remember much before the age of 3. If you think about your own childhood memories, you’ll probably remember feelings and moments, times you spent with your family, funny stories and events, right?

Personalised Height Chart: Growscroll Review by TNC Expert Mumma Morrison

Personalised Height Charts | Review by Fi Morrison

by Fi Morrison

I’ve always been a sentimental kind of person. The kind who keeps handwritten notes, dated photographs and small tokens of appreciation and love. To me, these things represent moments in time that I have cherished and want to hold onto for a lifetime. As a first-time mother, my sentimentality increased tenfold. I am always looking for ways to mark the moments of my son’s life so I can remember them for years to come (hence starting my own blog). Countless photographs have been taken; milestone cards, keepsakes and books have been used to document all the special occasions; even birthday cards have been kept as a reminder of these milestones. But it has only been recently that I’ve looked into personalised height charts as another token of my son’s childhood.

What clothes do I really need for my new baby?

Clothes I really need for my new baby

by Catherine Nelson-Williams

It’s a question most new mums want to know the answer to – what clothes do I really need for my new baby? I mean, is there anything more adorable than tiny little newborn baby clothes? But the sheer amount of options on offer can be a tad overwhelming! I loved shopping for new baby clothes when I was pregnant with my first, but I have to admit that I did end up with lots of items that were barely used. So, what are the most essential newborn clothing items, and how do you stop yourself from going a little crazy shopping during that wonderful nesting phase?

The Benefits of Amber for Teething

The Benefits of Amber for Teething

With Kirsten from Amberocks

In today's blog post we are exploring the many benefits of Amber and how it can assist not only with teething but many other conditions for babies, children and adults. Back when I was pregnant with my son, a close friend sent me a baltic amber necklace as a gift. Maxi wore it on and off from the time he started teething until all his teeth came in, and I definitely noticed a difference in his temperament when he wasn't wearing it!

Benefits of Amber for Teething

Being a nervous first time mum, I used to take it off at night and tie it around his ankle instead, just to be safe. My daughter on the other hand wore hers around her neck 24/7 until well after all her teeth came in! I'm a big believe in natural therapies and loved using amber for both my kids - I truly felt it made a difference to their teething journeys! And how gorgeous did they look wearing them? (biased mum I know!)

How to help your child adjust to the new baby

by Catherine Nelson-Williams

Helping your child adjust to the new baby is an issue a lot of Mums worry about – I know I certainly spent a lot of time worrying about this during my second pregnancy. After all, my toddler had enjoyed my undivided attention for 3 whole years and had never had to worry about sharing me with another child!

Introducing solids to your baby as a new mum

Introducing Solids to Your New Baby As New Mum

My journey through Baby Led Weaning and Solids - By Fi Morrison

A big thank you to Fi Morrison for sharing her experience with introducing solids to her baby as a new Mum x

Our "introduction to solids" journey began over 7 months ago, when my son was 4 months old. I was eager to start him on solids, because it seemed to be another “milestone” he could meet. Another step in his development, signaling that he was growing more and more with each passing day (how I could wish those younger days back!). I eagerly did the “mum thing” by creating purees from scratch – chopping, steaming and blending countless vegetables and fruits. I did this consistently for a couple of months, but not because I enjoyed it. No, it lost its novelty factor within a week. I continued on blending fruits and veg because I thought I was giving my son the best chance for a nutritious, healthy diet. And because the thought of baby-led weaning frightened me.

The “BF” Edit

The Breastfeeding Edit

Our Favourite Breastfeeding Products!

* Cover image courtesy of Emily Nelson Art

Today marks the beginning of World Breastfeeding Week (Aug 1-7, 2017) which is aimed at encouraging Mums to breastfeed their children for at least the first six months of their baby’s life. Breastfeeding my babies was one of the most difficult challenges for me as a new Mum, and I was fortunate enough to be able to breastfeed both of them with a lot of help and support! I barely made it to 6 months with my son, but made it to almost a year with my daughter and probably would have fed her for longer if she wasn’t so adamant that she was done (headstrong from the very beginning!).

It’s so important to talk about the fact that breastfeeding doesn’t come naturally to every Mum and that it can be incredibly hard in the early days – but, with the right information and support systems in place, most mums can successfully breastfeed. Read about my breastfeeding journey here plus some fabulous Breastfeeding tips from Jessica McCarroll at First in Breast Dressed. If you’re struggling in your feeding journey, please reach out to a Lactation consultant, or pop over to our Facebook support Group FIND YOUR VILLAGE – our lovely group of Mums would love to support you!

In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week and to support all of our Breastfeeding Mamas, this Edit is all about sharing our favourite Breast-feeding friendly products from our wonderful Nursery Collective boutiques and services - and as always, some fantastic, exclusive offers!

WHAT IS THE FINNISH BABY BOX CONCEPT?

finnishbabybox

Guest Blog: Susanna Heiskanen of Tuutu Baby Box

Did you know that in Finland, expectant mothers are given a special baby box by the state - a starter kit of clothes, baby items and toys that can even be used as a bed. This beautiful tradition dates back to the 1930’s and some even believe it has helped Finland achieve one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates.

Today on the blog, we have the lovely Susanna Heiskanen, co-founder of Tuutu Baby Box, the first Finnish designed and Australian made Baby Box, sharing with us a little bit more background about this wonderful concept.
